First Grade FUN

Hello Families! 

This week we have been working on writing number sentences and will begin learning subtraction.

 In reading have spent lots of time learning about reading behaviors:

 check your sneak peek

 do something at the end

 read more and more and keep track

 set goals

 reread to smooth out your voice

 scoop up words in phrases

  reread to see more

Next we will begin focusing on reading strategies! :0)

We are still working on writing our very own small moment stories: 

focusing on stretching out words

 listening for sounds

 including vowels

revising and adding details (who, what, when, where, and how)

Tomorrow we will have an all school assembly! The theme that we have adopted this year is - Always Together - Stronger Than Ever

Another great week at Orchard Hill!!! :0)

We have been doing lots of reading here in the classroom and working on building our reading muscles! We are setting goals to read more and more. Soon, very soon, you will see books coming home in your child's backpack. Until then, keep reading to your child in the evening - it will be fun for all of you! :0)

We are working on how to write a small moment story (narrative). Make a plan, touch and tell our story, sketch, and then write. Ask your child about their small moment story! 

This week we will also begin practicing our spelling routines. We will work on words here at school. In a couple of weeks, you will get more information on our spelling assignments.

Reminder: 

September 16 Orchard Hill Spirit Wear orders are due. If you need a new order form please let your classroom teacher know.

What a great first week of school!!! It was wonderful to see all of you at your child's In-Put Conferences!!

Reminders: 

Tennis Shoes on PE days. 

Believe it or not - it gets chilly in our classrooms - it is a good idea to keep a sweatshirt in your child's backpack.

Be on the lookout for snack calendars and Scholastic Book Orders at the end of each month.

We are reviewing kindergarten sight words. 10 words will come home each Friday in their backpack - please continue to review them.

HOMEWORK: Please read to your child each night!! This will help them with their fluency skills! THANK YOU!!
